Ask These Questions At Your IVF Consultation
Deciding to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF) is a big step in your fertility journey, and preparing for your first consultation can help you feel more empowered. Ask these questions to become more informed and confident in the process.

Going to your first in vitro fertilization (IVF) appointment can feel stressful, but having some questions ready can help you get the answers you need to feel more in control of your fertility journey.

The skilled and compassionate fertility specialists at Effortless IVF™ in Fort Worth and Bedford, Texas, know how challenging it is to navigate infertility. Dr. Kevin Doody and Dr. Kathleen Doody are devoted to providing excellent care with a patient-centered approach.

During your IVF consultation, our team covers many common questions, and from there will address any remaining questions you may have. Gaining a clear understanding of the IVF process is key for making informed decisions about your fertility journey. If you need some ideas on where to start, here are some good questions to consider asking.

1. What is the IVF success rate for patients my age?

Age is a factor in IVF success, and it’s wise to inquire about the success rates for your age group. Women aged 35 and under tend to have higher success rates with IVF.

Underlying health conditions are another factor affecting success rates. Our team conducts a comprehensive evaluation and explains how your individualized factors influence your chances of having a successful pregnancy via IVF.

2. What fertility tests might I need?

Before you start your IVF journey, you’ll undergo diagnostic testing to detect any underlying issues affecting your fertility. During your consultation, ask your provider about the specific tests you need. These may include:

  • Blood tests to check hormone levels, ovarian reserve, and reproductive health
  • Ultrasound imaging to evaluate your uterus and ovaries
  • A semen analysis to assess your partner’s sperm health

Your provider explains how your diagnostic results might influence the IVF approach, and whether additional treatments, like surgery or medication, may be necessary.

3. How will your clinic tailor my IVF treatment?

Each fertility journey is unique, and this extends to your fertility plan. It’s a good idea to inquire about how your treatment plan will meet your unique needs. At Effortless IVF™, this may involve individualized protocols, such as specific hormone medications, egg retrieval timing, or genetic screening.

4. How does Effortless IVF™ differ?

Our clinic specializes in a new approach to IVF that simplifies many of the complex, and often stressful, steps involved in the process. In traditional IVF, egg retrieval, fertilization, and early embryo development typically occur in a lab under strict conditions where specialists carefully manage the process.

Effortless IVF™ uses an intrauterine culture system called the INVOcell® device, where fertilization and early embryo development happen inside the woman’s body, rather than in a lab. This approach reduces the need for extensive lab work, decreases hormone stimulation requirements, and involves fewer office visits, making it a more natural and accessible option for many couples.

5. Does your clinic perform fresh or frozen embryo transfers?

Effortless IVF™ offers the option of both fresh and frozen embryo transfers, depending on individual circumstances. After five days of embryo development inside the woman’s body, the INVOcell® device is removed, and we assess the viable embryos.

The healthiest embryos are selected for fresh transfer back into the uterus. For those who wish to preserve additional embryos, they can be frozen for future use, providing the flexibility of frozen embryo transfer (FET) later on.

This means you won’t need to undergo another egg retrieval cycle if the first attempt is unsuccessful. When you choose to freeze your embryos, our team can perform preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to check for any chromosomal abnormalities.

Knowing which embryos have normal chromosomes can eliminate chromosome-related health issues and increase your odds of having a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby.

6. What happens to unused embryos?

Our clinic won’t discard any unused embryos without your consent. You can store them for later use, donate them to other patients, or donate them for study.  When you begin treatment, we discuss your options so you can make an informed decision.

7. What IVF timeline and recovery can I expect?

IVF has several steps, from ovarian stimulation to embryo transfer. Knowing the timeframe and what to expect during each phase can make the process go more smoothly. Consider inquiring about the timeline and how long the entire process will take so you can plan accordingly for checkups, medications, and recovery.

In addition, inquire about the recovery time following egg retrieval and embryo transfer. While most women may resume normal activities within a few days, knowing what to expect can help you take better care of yourself during this crucial period.
